Roadkill
I saw a squirrel this morning poor little thing, I wish drivers would take more care, especially in obvious rural areas, I know accidents happen but if people would drive slower in these areas rather than speeding because there are no cameras a few more animals might be spared.

years ago as I was driving one night I hit a Wallabie (like a small kangaroo). There was no way I could avoid it, it just came straight out of nowhere. I felt awful about it for days.

Re: Roadkill
Hi Mal, I know very often they will just suddenly dart out into the road, some accidents can't be avoided, but it's the people who deliberately speed in such areas that annoy me

Re: Roadkill
Hi again Violet ,
what makes me mad are the people who go out at night to shoot kangaroos and wild boar just for 'sport', for the 'fun' of it.

Re: Roadkill
Hi Mal, there's no 'sport' involved imo, no animal stands a chance against a gun, killing for food I can understand but killing for pleasure???????

Re: Roadkill
I've hit various animals in my 25 years of driving. It sucks!! The largest was a wolf and the smallest was a squirrel. Everyone of them makes me cry. :( My husband tried to console me once by saying that the animal must have wanted to die or knew it was their time, else they would not have run into the road or into a passing car. I don't think thats the case. But.....

Re: Roadkill
I remember running over a "Possum". It was late at night and my headlights were on full. I think the "Possum" was dazed by my car lights and ran in front of the car. It popped its little head and body up and all I remember seeing are these big beautiful eyes looking straight at the car. All this happened so quickly and I could not safely stop or swerve to miss it.
This happened years ago and I will never forget it.

Re: Roadkill
In New Zealand most of the road kill are either "Possum" or sometimes someones family cat. We don't have the exotic species of other countries.

Re: Roadkill
neptune, possum is exotic to us here in England!
I often say how I wish we could go back to horse/pony driven vehicles.
I too become upset seeing dead animals and birds on the country lanes.

Re: Roadkill
I know it can't be avoided sometimes, we were once on a narrow country lane when we spotted and owl right in the middle of our side of the road, we were able to swerve and miss it, but had a car been coming the other way we couldn't have done that, the owl never moved.

Re: Roadkill
I recently saw a documentary about this old guy in england who collected and ate road kill.
He was a very lovely chap and ate roadkill because he was a conservationist who did not believe in eating mass produced meat.
His home was clean and very homely but he was definitely eccentric. He had a couple of University students over for dinner to try his roadkilled "Badger".
His meat is well packaged but it made my tummy churn and I gagged especially when I saw him handle but not cook rotten carcasses.

That said, if he didn't use it other animals would, but you'd need a strong stomach I think.

Re: Roadkill
i feel sorry for people who have been in this position. once i was travelling home from tai chi and i voice said you'd better slow down (i was prolly doing 50 km/ 30 mph) so i did, and a kangaroo hopped in front of me as i came round the bend....
mal, psycho slice used to think it was fun to kill, he printed an article from a newspaper on his karma, when he got shot. i forget which thread thats on ... some fishers got into trouble in the abrolhos islands on the weekend.. i always chuckle when i hear a hunter got shot by his dog or the like. call me nasty but i hope they learn.
as a vegetarian, i'm happy if ppl eat road kill and don't kill other animals.
possums are pests in NZ, in AUS, they are protected. i've never seen one except in parks/ zoos.

Roadkill makes me sad because it is a reminder of how humans and animals clash, it is a shame we can't live together in harmony :(

Re: Roadkill
Hello Zero
"Road Kill" is here to stay as long as we drive cars. I read this book maybe 20 years ago called "Duncton Wood"...or was it..."Watership Down". They were both amazing reads. Cars were the equivalent of "Evil Beings...or...Soaring Owls" whoes Bright light "Hypnotized and Paralised" its Victim. They became "Road Kill" if they could not cross the "Soaring Owls" path in time.
Cars must be an "Animals" greatest fear along side its natural predators.

Re: Roadkill
It has got to be terrifying for them, and it can't always be avoided without risk of a major accident,.
Off topic here a bit but I watched watership down when I was a kid, it really upset me, a video nasty if ever I saw one i'd never in a million years dream of putting it on for a child I remember too well how much it disturbed me, but perhaps i'm too sensitive

Possums are not native to New Zealand
When there are many road-kills of one particular species, like kangaroos in the center of Australia, and wallabies in Tasmania,it is because there are many of this species in the area. Not that anyone wants to run down an animal. Usually if one runs down a kangaroo, there is some damage on the car.

Re: Roadkill
Much road kill on the roads on the Navajo Reservation. On the good side, road kill feeds the Ravens and Crows here, and a few other scavengers. I even saw a Golden Eagle flying off with road kill in its talons.
