Have you ever looked your Surname up?

Ever found you had an unusual surname?

    Where it originated from?

    Is it foreign?
    Is it English?

    Some interesting and unusual surnames.

    My maiden name was Craik.
I was told but can't prove it,it originated from the French.
    Then to Scotland.

Originally it was Creve de or du Coure, not sure of the last name spelling.   Think it is Creve du Courve.    Know there a 'v' somewhere in there.
    My memory is getting worse....

Came from the French somewhere or another.

We had our own scottish tartan.   Not very known I must add....

Look the name up on the net....

My original famil name was denHofen from Germany. Our name was changed several times as we traveled around Europe in an effort to escape the Catholic church. Our family were Calvanists, which the Catholic church attempted to get rid of by any means possible.

I just looked up our family name and, it turns out, there is a small town in Germany by that name. I wonder if that is where our family came from???????

I would say if your name is the same  as the town then there is a good chance you are right.
Do what I did a good while ago.   Go on the heritage sites and see if you can track it down.
You can usually go so far in maybe for a generation then they charge.
Well, worth it.   I found a lot on my father's side as his parents died young.
Mind,it gets harder the deeper you go....

My maiden name means "true man" of the king, "homme vrai"... that part of the family can be traced back to the Norman knights and coming to England from Normandy.

My married name is very English and is a place name.

That's correct.   The Normans did come over.    (digging in the memories of my history lessons...:giggles: )

The only reference of my maiden name living down South way back, was a printer living London.
There was a Craik on another site I used to be on.    Think his father was one of my great uncles.  Came from the same area in Scotland.
I have always found heritage to be very interesting....
