Do you believe a broken heart can have such a devastating effect it can actually kill you, a lot believe animals (in particular dogs) can pine away and die if their owner passes away, but what about people?

Re: Broken Heart
Hi again Violet
People are 'animals' in many ways--and yes they cane pine for a lost one.
They can also give up and pass on just like a dog and many other animals.

Re: Broken Heart
Yes, a broken heart can indeed kill you. You will see it in the couples that have been married for a long time. When one dies the other shortly passes after them. From a broken heart they give up the will to go on anymore.

Re: Broken Heart
I have noticed that if a "Wife of many years" dies first, her "Husband of many years" follows soon after.
If a "Husband dies first, the "Wife lives a long while after"???...
...Why?...

Broken Heart
Hi Neptune
I think it is one of those 'statistical' facts that hide the truth.
There has been a tradition until very recently that the man in a marriage should be older than the woman.
I am not sure how that tradition started --but it is certainly true for the whole of the 19th century and for most of the 20th century.
Given that the man can be around 10 years older the wife will be younger and less likely to die of a broken heart.

I've noticed that too, I heard a theory once that it is because the man usually works all his life and when he ceases to work he is totally redundant, a woman is never redundant as she has the care of the home etc (i'm speaking generally though times are changing)
