Does anyone know? It's one thing having them and interpreting their meanings but what about the actual cause?

Re: What causes nightmares?
You can fear something without actually knowing you are fearing something.
If you've had a nightmare the main emotion you felt will be fear of some kind.

Re: What causes nightmares?
Hello
Nightmares are many a level of state of the mind. At times its spirit contacts one has as one is in a "waking state" not fully sleeping. I s pent a week in a sleep lab study. I was to be there one night but I had such interesting and complex issues I stayed a week in study.
I have "visions" I have Spriti visits both are NON Sleep events. Dreams are in the REM sleep mode. Nightmares are just more vivid dreams where the adrenal glands are activated and one recalls them more readily is all or is woke by them from one's heart rate going up or blood pressure or a sweat or shiver waking one. In that sudden waking state the brain does not have time to process something new ontop of the nightmare so its remembered.
When one wakes from a nights sleep one automatically starts to think on that day a head and that cancels out most time the recall of a dream.
Nightmares too are not always BAD we think they are but often its just the way that mind finally says OK ye are not seeing this message I am giving forth and now if ye look at this maybe ye will. Some are warnings that if we try to understand in them a great life lesson message be there.

Re: What causes nightmares?
Nightmares can also be triggered by what we eat or drink before bedtime.
