I think it all depends on how you are mentally and physically. As you say, if you are nimble of mind and body, then no age is too old

Re: Does living to a great old age
it's the mind, not the body that counts.
As long as the mind is agile and working, then that is ok.
At 60 years,I felt no different than a 18 year old. At 70 I was still good and healthy.
At 77 years now,I still feel healthy and the mind,I would say is still pretty good.
The memory falters a little, but we all suffer from that now and again.
The physical body thank God is only a shell which will be discarded at death.
So never worry about physical age,it the 18 year old feeling that counts.

It's true though Joanie 60 is the new 40 when I was a kid anyone 40+ dressed and acted far older than they do now, seeing sixty year olds in jeans was unheard of when I was kid, it's the norm now for both sexes.

I agree, as long as the old brain is still ticking over nicely that's the main thing, but it's also important to try and keep the body active so you can get out and about. It would become very boring to be stuck indoors all day every day.

Re: Does living to a great old age
I live in sheltered housing now, only because hubby was very ill.
We sold up and moved nearer to the family but I didn't really want to leave our own lovely bungalow.
This place is supposed to be for agile and mentally alert residents who can look after themselves.
I hope I can keep feeling like that for many years yet.
If you see me disappear,I'm either 'up there' or in a 'home'.
God forbid,not a home!

Re: Does living to a great old age
Having cared for my wifes Mother and Aunt--it does worry me!!
Both were widowed at quite a young age-(50's) They moved to be near us when our daughter was born-34 years ago.
My Mother in law had a stroke in 2001 and died in 2006 leaving her sister to live alone.
She was fine up to the age of 97--able to get about--keep the garden and so on--we helped with any really heavy work--decorating etc.
Between the age of 97 and her death last mid-summers day at the age of 101 her life went downhill rapidly. Neighbours told us she was weeding the front garden at 2 in the morning--she overdosed on her medicine after falling asleep one afternoon and assuming it was morning when she woke up. The list goes on.....
Eventually she went into a nursing home and for the last 15 months was a vegeatable--she recognised nobody and was fed by a carer.
I was unable to visit during this time--it kept coming into my head that I would be doing her a great service if I picked up her pillow and smothered her!!
I simply do not understand why she had to endure those final 15 months or so! AND I now fear ending up the same way

Re: Does living to a great old age
Both my parents suffered mentally,my dad with Senile Dementia and my mother with Alzheimers.
It worries me a lot but I keep my mind active and flowing as much as I can.
I even checked with the doctors but was told 'Get out of here, there's nowt wrong with you'.
I was told keep the brain active, and body healthy.

Re: Does living to a great old age
Personally I'd prefer my mind and body to stay equally right! Though if I was given the option I'd prefer my marbles to roll out and keep the body on the go. I'd hate to be trapped in a useless body, sat there day in day out not able to do things for myself... It'd drive me crackers that.

Re: Does living to a great old age
I remember becoming very upset about the way my mother had changed.
She was an extremely intelligent lady and to see her go like a child was horrific.
Sometimes she knew who I was, most times she didn't.
I asked to see the doctor and he was so kind in explaining to me that I should not get upset, that Mum was happy in her own way.
She was back in the memories of her childhood.
Which she was,she forgot my dad,she forgot she was even married.
She was a child again.
Reliving her happy childhood again.

Re: Does living to a great old age
I saw a lot of that where I used to work. There was one lady who was constantly trotting around looking for her husband. She lived in a happier time too. You could just tell by the way she was she was never down. She was ace that lady it was sad when she passed away.

Should I get so bad i'd hope someone would do this for me, but the reality is I couldn't let someone get into trouble
