about ages, and wondering why 18 is 'the key of the door' i'm sure there are others like this but I can't think just now, but why 'the key of the door?' the door to adulthood perhaps?

Are there different sayings for ages in different countries?

I've never heard that term or anything even close. So I'm guessing it's a British thing? Here when a person reaches the legal age for drinking and voting, we just say they're legal.

We even give ornamental keys as gifts in the uk they sell them in greetings card shops (is it 18 or 21? I was thinking... 588401 it might be 21) it's definately one of those two ages.

    hi violet and kaere,
i've seen it for both. i think it's the different ages for what kaere said.
but i've seen cakes for 21 in the family. a friend got one (gold key) for 18th...i didn't coz my dad was dying...but yeah i think it is a key to entry.
perhaps it was a templar thing, freemason thing...now a ritual no one really understands, but does anyhow.

Hi Sparkly it's funny how many things we actually do without thinking or even knowing why we're doing it, from blowing out candles on a birthday cake to tossing coins into a well I was thinking... 821538 I suppose a lot of it comes from seeing parents and such doing these things.

I was thinking... 809779 It's amazing how many will say 'i'm not superstitious' and then do the 'touch wood' thing in their next breath
