The Pope Retiring

I expect like me a lot of you were surprised to hear this news today.
What are your views on this I would love to know!

Just been reading the news on it,Maureen.
Ill health apparently. My curiosity is....why do they not chose slightly younger men ?

I have been watching the footage of when he became Pope in 2005--he was a very healthy young looking man back then. He looks old and tired today--such a change in 7/8 years.

Yes,I remember seeing him then,Peter. How much younger he looked or maybe not younger but more full of life. I can imagine just how much pressure must be put upon such an important person.
Much like our royality. But I do feel there is more than tiredness....I feel serious illness.

Yes, I agree Joan. But at least he's realised that he just can't do it anymore and I admire him for that. I expect it took a lot of serious thought on his part. I wonder what will happen to him, will he retire to a monastery do you think, and when he passes will he get a Pope's funeral? Would love to know the answers to those questions!!!

You read my thoughts,Maureen....was thinking the same things after watching the news.
Poor old man,I feel for him.
Whatever title he has,he is still human like the rest of us.

I've never understood why they choose older men either, perhaps it's something to do with respect, wisdom, experience or simply tradition? Sorry to hear he's ill though.

Maybe they just don't want anyone younger so they're not stuck with someone for several decades....? And at 85 how many individuals could keep meeting the demands of a job like that anyway? As a human he deserves a break.

I'm pleased the business has no significance in my life.

I personally would love to see someone in their 60's get the job.

I am sure that the pressures of the job have gotten to him....especially with the scandals of the multitude of pedophiles within the ranks of the clergy and the coverups by their superiors. Then, to add on all the lawsuits involved, it must have taken one heck of a toll.........

Agree there,1antique. I am not quite sure about any priesthood,how religion works in assessing the higher posts of the church.

I would say that the Church of England moves in the same way.
Most 'higher-ups' are a good age when they reach that elevated position.
I have never seen a young priest yet to succeed into the position of, for instance, an Archbishop etc.
I assume it must take several years to 'climb the ladder'.

As a Spiritualist I don't much concern myself with mainstream religions but one can't fail to be shocked at the number of kiddy-fiddlers - predominantly if not exclusively males-on-males as these are male-dominated religions - there are in certain religious organisations.

The mainstream churches have yet to effectively deal with the predators in their midst, often recognised as such. Thank whatever god you need to that Spiritualist churches aren't so afflicted.

Somehow I've never connected or even thought about the spiritualist churches in that particular vein.
It never even entered my mind.

But it does go on in quite a few churches of different religions beside the Catholic churches.

The positions of leadership in the church are highly political positions....very little to do with religion, but much to do with enforcing the outdated views of the church and punishing those priests who are more progressive.

Maybe it is time for the catholic church to come out of the dark ages and join the rest of the world?

What would the church gain by doing that? If it didn't promise to bring in new members and new money, why would it want the hassle of changing anything? for the sake of truth and enlightenment? yeah, right!

I always respect other's religion as I do my own.
I was brought up Church of England,was christened and married there,both times.

But I notice that both churches are now becoming very much the same.
I do try and respect others religion and would never deliberately pour any scorn on what others believe in.

This poor old man,I truly feel sorry for and respect his decision for retiring because of ill health.
At least he is honest and if he feels he cannot carry on so be it.
When old age strikes,the body becomes weak and tired. That's the time to give in and rest.

But on this one I am in FULL agreement with you.
The main stream religeons have had there day--may I say 'chance'-they have failed!
Spritualism is all that is left and will be the way/path of future generations!

The reason behind the pope's sudden retirement.
Apparently all will be revealed after his retirement.

It all means nothing to me, I'm not even a catholic, but for someone who sticks their nose into other peoples lives, such as their sex life, we certainly can do without.

When it involves children,yes,there should be an investigation.
It is happening too much these days through all religions.

I love it! Religion is not what it used to be....religious! lol
There's more gossip and interest in what goes on any church today.
Never mind the gossip about what goes on with stars today....it's more exciting with the church!

I think there has always been gossip and that with the church, and I will admit not all of it nice.
