I just wondered if there are any herbs I should avoid at all costs, which may be harmful to children, pets or even myself, are there any which are unsafe for a herb garden?

All parts of foxglove are poisonous, dried or fresh so it's probably a good idea to avoid it.
I did a quick google cause I couldn't think of anything else offhand and came up with this site http://www.saferpets.co.uk/ToxicPlantsForPets.html As it's a UK site there should be some good info there for you.
