Hello all Super Volcano 577431 ,
I was watching 'The Known Universe' on the Nat Geo channel and volcanologists and scientists have been observing what they call a 'super volcano' beneath Yellowstone National Park. According to them it isn't a matter of if but when it erupts. The destructive force will be so great that it could wipe out all life as we know it. I leave you with that comforting thought.

Seriously though, I heard about that somewhere too, not a nice thought but would we know if it happened or would it be just so sudden we'd be gone in an instant.

Yellowstone erupts approximately every 650,000 years and is past due right now. The last time it erupted, it dropped several inches of ash on the east coast of the United States...almost 2000 miles away.

No, it would not be a humanity ending senario, but it would destroy a lot of life in the United States and Canada and cause (at the least) a mini ice age due the debris in the atmosphere. Plus, there would be a loss of food production in the U.S. and around the world for many years following a super eruption from Yellowstone.

It happened before, and yes, it will happen again.
