Wolf in Holland ? Empty Wolf in Holland ?

Post  norseman Fri Jul 12, 2013 2:50 pm

Dutch scientists are examining a wolf [?] body found beside a motorway. It looks like that the wolf has finally arrived almost at the Channel coast. Just about the only part of Europe wolf-free is Britain [pity the land bridge is no longer there !]
Come on, brothers, just one more step and you will be back in your old haunts. We need you in Britain, you were the top predator before you were killed off by man. Now, several species are out of control. The fox, which you would not tolerate in your ranges, has increased massively in numbers and has even invaded the towns. Deer are a pest, there are millions of them, chewing through our woodlands. There is talk of a major cull now but much better would be a natural cull by the wolfenfolk.

Anyone who says that there is no room in Britain for the wolf anymore just does not know Britain. There are huge tracts of open country in the North, Scotland, the South-West, and Wales.
I long to hear wolfsong echoing across the moors and dales ! :treehug:

    Interesting topic,Norseman.
But think of the havoc here in the UK,wolves roaming around.
There would be fear all over through the country.

Im in agrement the wolves should come back get rid of the vermin that roam the streets.look at home many people have been attacked by foxes.
something needs to be done, but if the human poulation stopped expanding you would have less rubbish on the streets,so foxes wouldnt scavenge for food.

Major problem in the UK is deer. Out of control breeding. There was a proposal made that they be culled - better to be culled by the wolf than being shot. Fox ditto.

The wolf has suffered from bad propaganda. Yellowstone Park [US] is a case in point. Ranchers shot all the wolves because a few cattle had been taken. The net result was that the coyote population exploded. So the wolf was reintroduced and culled the coyote but now the ranchers are again shooting the wolf. In my patch, the Red Kite was reintroduced. Several have been found poisoned by gamekeepers putting out poisoned bait. All because the kite takes a few grouse which are raised to be hunted by shooting parties.
Wolf is in most countries in Europe and [as far as I know], not one example of people being attacked. The wolf will avoid people wherever possible.

Deer are harmless to humans but I understand the culling of them.  Danger on the roads.

I agree to a certain point about the culling of animals.  Wild animals.

Cattle are large animals, same as a humans.       What is the chance they will attack humans in the case of hunger?

I love all animals and hate the idea of culling any.   But what do we do when our favourite pet is ill from a fatal disease?
We put them out of their misery by mercy killing.   I agree with that but it is killing none the less.

Deer are killing off newly planted trees and decimating the greenwood. It's not the Red Deer but the roe deer and the small Chinese variety who escaped from estates - no predators, so nothing to balance their numbers. When we killed off the wolves centuries back, we upset the natural balance.

I understand that,Norseman.    But wolves are natural hunters and will kill the weakest for food.   Or dogs are descended from them and look how a vicious dog can turn against it's master....

    Good topic though.

Apparently, in some areas of England, wild boar are becoming numerous too - another ancient inhabitant !
The beaver has been re-introduced in Scotland in the face of opposition from foresters. Otters are in every part of Britain now. The pine martin is back in Keilder. The red kite is becoming established slowly. Sea Eagles were re-introduced from Norway. And Brock will survive and thrive despite any cull - they have a lot of activists on their side !
Sea bird colonies, seals in the river estuaries, salmon in most of the rivers again - Britain is becoming alive again !

Good!  It's about time....Oh,to see England as I remember it...
Frosty mornings.   But the sun shining.    Beaches kept clean.

Parks kept tidy.   Pavements swept and the old coal fire burning brightly....
Robin redbreast singing his heart out and snow falling on Xmas day....
Brrrr!   No computers but an interesting book for a Xmas pressie.

    That was life!:giggles:
