Re: Autumn is fast approaching
Hi Violet
I adore the Autumn season too !!!! I honestly don't mind that the days get shorter, I'm a bit of a night hawk in my own right, and there's something very cozy about long wintery type nights. I have a woodstove too, and my favourite scent in the whole wide world is the aroma of smoke tunneling out of the chimneys into the cold and crispy air outside... Ahhhh... I just LOVE that smell ...
Warm Hugs to you on every awesome Autumn day to come xo...

Beautiful shots!
It has still been in the high 90's and low 100's here, but the weather guesser said that we are supposed to have a cooling trend move in and drop the lows into the low 30's. I totally dislike quick changes like this. All they do is make everyone sick...including me. Plus, it takes me forever to adjust. I stay cold for about a month.

I have to admit that I love to walk outside on a cold, crisp night and feel the sting of the cold against my cheeks.

Such beautiful pictures! I live in an area of almost entirely evergreens along with a few oak trees which merely turn brown and fall off. I miss the opportunity of seeing all of the gorgeous colors offered by the various trees of other regions.

I can't believe Thursday is October 1.. When did that happen? I still remember when the Christmas tress was coming down. Saying it will be back up sooner than we imagine.. Sure enough, it's only 3 months away.

Funny enough that is one of the things I've always liked about fall, and winter. Was that it was darker earlier, and it was a darker dark. In summer its lighter out, and nights barely seem like an actual night.

Re: Autumn is fast approaching
Yeah I know just what you mean, funny how some feel cheated of daylight when it's dark early, but others, like us, feel cheated of night time when it's light for half the nightinnerlight wrote:Violet wrote:it's getting darker much earlier I can't wait

Just out of interest why is it Autumn in the UK and Fall in the US does anyone know?

Re: Autumn is fast approaching
We still call it Autumn in some circles... It's more commonly called Fall. Maybe because the leaves "fall"

I wondered if it might be something to do with the leaves falling

Wonder if it also has something to do with the clocks as in ..SPRING Forward...FALL ..back??? Suppose its just the leaves falling though..I love dark nights i sleep better..and its nice sitting round fire with winter goodies like pomegranates and chestnuts..and once the nuts hit the shops i turn into a squirell as i munch loads of them..

Re: Autumn is fast approaching
OK...I finally had to look it up:
The word autumn comes from the Old French word autompne (automne in modern French), and was later normalized to the original Latin word autumnus.[8] There are rare examples of its use as early as the 12th century, but it became common by the 16th century.
Before the 16th century, harvest was the term usually used to refer to the season. However, as more people gradually moved from working the land to living in towns (especially those who could read and write, the only people whose use of language we now know), the word harvest lost its reference to the time of year and came to refer only to the actual activity of reaping, and autumn, as well as fall, began to replace it as a reference to the season.[9][10]
The alternative word fall is now mostly a North American English word for the season. It traces its origins to old Germanic languages. The exact derivation is unclear, the Old English fiæll or feallan and the Old Norse fall all being possible candidates. However, these words all have the meaning "to fall from a height" and are clearly derived either from a common root or from each other. The term came to denote the season in the 16th century, a contraction of Middle English expressions like "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year".[11]
During the 20th century, English immigration to the colonies in North America was at its lowest point, and the new settlers took their language with them. While the term fall gradually became obsolescent in Britain, it became the more common term in North America, where autumn is nonetheless preferred in scientific and often in literary contexts.

Hope this clears things up!

Re: Autumn is fast approaching
Conkers is a game traditionally played by children in Britain, Ireland and some former British colonies using the seeds of horse-chestnut trees – the name conker is also applied to the seed and to the tree itself. The game is played by two players, each with a conker threaded onto a piece of string: they take turns to strike each other's conker until one breaks.
