Killing animals, corruption, illegal sex: 3 national highways to hell

The first and foremost sin is to kill the living beings for food.

The second sin is corruption for money and wealth.

The third sin is corruption in the sexual life.

These three sins are mentioned by the Lord as the three national highways to hell (Kamah Krodhah tathaa Lobhah... Gita).

A devotee asked following questions:

Question) Why Japan is prone to frequent Nature Disasters/Earthquake/ Tsunami? As we know about the people of Japan who are comparatively sincere, honest and hardworking. In case of an Earthquake, they maintain honesty by not looting the destroyed infrastructure for food/money etc (we have read many recent articles about it). From your previous discourses we understood that Earthquake/Tsunami indicates God’s angerness.

Shri Swami Replied: In the divine administration of God, everything runs with utmost perfection and strict logic. Sometimes, we do not understand the logical background due to our inefficient and incomplete sight of the past deeds of certain human beings in their previous lives. Even the present cannot be understood perfectly by us since we are exposed to a part of the external life only of any human being. We are not aware of the internal sins and also all the actions done by those human beings. Without the complete and deep background, we start bombarding questions on the divine administration with just a drop of knowledge about a specific lot of humanity. However, questions must be put so that we gain knowledge through answers.

The answer becomes very difficult since if God gives us the real answer, we will not believe it. Therefore, it is always better to approach such problem from the other side, which means that you should start with the assumption that the divine administration is always correct and recognize the limits of our information. Moreover, the analysis of such issues will not help us in any way in our spiritual path by which only we can please the almighty. Let us be pragmatic and proceed perfectly in Pravrutti and Nivrutti so that others will follow us setting us as the best example. We should always discuss about the useful side of the topic than the useless side.

We should always remember that God is never angry with any living being including even the worst demon since everybody is His child only. All the punishments given by Him are only the practical steps of His medical treatment of the psychology of His children to make them achieve good psychological behaviour in Pravrutti. He never tries to push us in to Nivrutti. It is enough for Him if we are good in Pravrutti (behaviour in this world). Sometimes, He has no alternative than becoming harsh in the treatment. We call this harshness in His treatment as His anger. Such harshness is only His rigid trail based on immense kindness to give good treatment to His issues so that all live peacefully without harming each other enjoying the facilities given by Him in this nature. Hence, earthquake and Tsunami are the results of bad behaviour in this society only.

I would place not killing people more of a sin than killing living beings for food....

Hitler was a vegetarian!!

Yes, killing a human being is a highest sin. Even killing living beings also equally sin!!
To kill an innocent animal like deer for food, you are not a tiger or a lion staying in the natural forest following the natural set-up. At least, the tiger or lion is excused because it will never eat vegetarian food. You are a human being granted with sharp intelligence that does sharp analysis and you have the option of vegetarian food. You also eat the vegetarian food. If you kill an innocent animal like goat/buffalo/chicken etc for your food, even though you have the option of the alternative vegetarian food, your attitude is proceeding in such a direction so that you will harm any innocent human being also for your enjoyment even though you have the alternative option for such enjoyment. This is more than sadism because a sadist enjoys by harming another person and he has no alternative person there for such enjoyment. If you analyze this subject through your sharp intelligence, you will find that the vegetarian food is far better than non-vegetarian food as per the medical science.

The proteins extracted by you from the plants in your vegetarian food are primary and are very good for health. The proteins taken by the animals from plants are re-synthesized in the body of the animal and such proteins are secondary only. The secondary proteins are not good for health. Therefore, as a student of science, you should act in every step after doing scientific analysis only. Apart from this, consider the path of sympathy, kindness and human compassion on seeing the agony of the bird or animal just after cutting it. If you do not give any consideration to these values and be cruel only, neither you are fit to study the science nor fit to study the arts having human values.

God came in human forms like Buddha and Mahaveera on this single programme only and preached the non-violence. Even though you do not participate in the killing of animal or bird, you become the due partner of the sin since the butcher is killing animals and birds to supply the mutton (meat) based on the demand of purchasers like you only. The scripture says that the non-violence is the highest justice (Ahimsaa paramo dharmah...). Even the plants have life but their mind is very primitive and hence the pain is very negligible compared to the birds, animals and human beings. Even in the case of plants, they are cut only after death, which ripens on losing the chlorophyll.

Parvati was called as Aparna because she did not even pluck the green leaves for her food during her penance. The sin is not in the non-vegetarian food, which is as good as vegetarian food, if you analyze the constituents like the common carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals etc. The sin lies only in the pain experienced by the animal or the bird in its death. Think a while that you are in its position and then discuss the subject. There is no sin in eating a naturally dead animal and a sect of Hindus called as Kapalikas do this and are not found fault for this. The word ‘Maamsa’ or mutton is derived like this “As this fellow (sa) kills me (Maam) now, I will kill him in the next birth”. Based on this, you become the innocent goat and the innocent goat becomes the butcher in the next birth so that the pain is practically experienced by you.

Your knowledge of nutrition is inaccurate. Proteins are composed of amino acids; some essential and some non essential. It is the combination of these amino acids that can help form a complete protein, e.g. an egg is a complete protein (as is meat) but beans require eating with a grain (like bread) to form a complete protein.

We are omnivores by physical design, i.e. we have canine teeth (to rip up meat) and hydrochloric acid in our stomachs to break down meat and render it digestible. An omnivore is not a carnivore, i.e. we are not meant to exist solely on meat but to eat a combination of meat/fish with herbs/vegetables, grains etc.

There are degrees of cruelty when it comes to killing animals, e.g. the practise of obtaining halal meat is particularly questionable (bleeding a live animal to death).

Imagine the degree of sin in cutting the throat of a living being, that too, for your food.

The pain is experienced by animal or bird when you cut its throat, which weeps by crying. Even a human being cut cries like this only. You must keep yourself in that place and experience the pain. In the Mahabharata, Vidura says that the real justice is to imagine the pain by keeping yourself in the place of your victim. Experience is said to be most important authority. You say that even hurting a co-human being by words is a sin. Imagine the degree of sin in cutting the throat of a living being, that too, for your food. There is no difference between an ordinary human being and animal/bird. In both cases, both mind and intelligence exist. In a scholarly human being, the intelligence is more developed. The mind is developed to the same extent in bird/animal or ordinary human being/scholarly human being. It is the mind that undergoes the pain. Hence, from the point of the suffering in mind, there is no even trace of difference in all the examples of Zoology.

The only difference between bird/animal and human being is that the pain is expressed through sound (cry) from throat generally in all the cases, but sometimes the human being expresses the pain in language before the actual cut of the throat. This is immaterial because the experience of pain in suffering is one and the same in all the cases.

God has created plenty of food through the kingdom of plants. Medical education also says that non-vegetarian food is not good for health since you are taking secondary proteins through it. God as Buddha and Mahaveera propagated this non-violence, which is the highest justice (Ahimsa paramo...).

Oh I see...by secondary proteins you mean meat/fish etc.

Everything living has a right to life. Plants are sensitive too! For instance, they have been wired up in labs and show reactions to a flame brought near to them.

In our society we are estranged/spared from the direct reality of animals suffering via slaughterhouses. I feel sure that if it was made compulsory to visit one of these places then there would be more vegetarians.

I mentioned Hitler was a vegetarian. It was a way of saying being vegetarian does not mean someone is homefree karma wise. Many other 'highways to hell'.
