I didnt like the Rider Waite either. A lot of the symbols are very christian, and its too busy. The artistry didn't appeal to me and very bland in colours.
My favourite deck was the Aquarian, lots of colour with clear pictures.
I also used to use The Native American Deck but found it was too spiritual for some people, a very deep deck with lots of spiritual messages which many people cannot handle.

I really like rider waite deck as I like the pictures on them and find them quite straightforward but I found the Sharman-Caselli deck yesterday and I must admit that though some of the pictures are a little similar this deck is far more appealing, but I haven't read with them yet but i'll post again when I have.

    hi
i am using the tarot de Marseille, and for my coming birthday i'm going to get the quest tarot.
your native American deck sounds very interesting astralphoenix.
how many decks do you usually use, allways the same one or do you change your decks for different kinds of readings? or just from time to time?

I no longer use the Tarot, as I found it very restricting when reading. I find it easier to pick up issues, feelings, situations etc from the person without the aid of any tools.
I use to have many decks, but have given a few away. I originally only had about 5-6 decks, but the Aquarian deck was the one I used all the time until I realised I no longer needed to use a tool for readings.

I use to have this "knowing" that one day I would move away from the tarot but didnt know where or how. My deck went everywhere I did, including travelling around Australia for many years, it was part of me. One of the things that finally did it for me was a couple of readings for 2 ladies that had turned up together, although I read them seperately, that is only one woman in the room at a time, and they shuffled the cards and chose the cards randomly, the same cards virtually turned up in their readings. I felt as if I was really struggling to get the info.
Then about 6 months later hubby and I had moved halfway across the country, and I walked into a new age shop just browsing, after approaching the counter I started the give the lady behind the counter a reading without the aid of any cards etc. It confirmed for me that I didn't need any tools as I am the tool. That was nearly 2 years ago and now I can do readings quite comfortably without the aid of any tools. Spirit showed me that I didnt need my cards by well and truly throwing me in the deep end as they knew that I could swim quite well! lol
So don't be afraid to try new things as Spirit knows what you can handle and will never give you anything you can't. You might surprise yourself and at the same time discover a new gift or just enhance an old one.

I know exactly what you mean, when you have a favourite deck that you can use well they almost become your friends, to cast them aside because you have new ones seems cruael somehow, sounds crazy but it's true

One of the easiest ways to keep your Tarot knowledge up to date, fresh and exciting is to buy new decks of all kinds.

The Rider Waite deck is 100 years old this year, :congrats:

There is a commemorative deck out already :)

The Rider Waite Colman Smith Deck was the first deck to have pictures on all the cards, major and minor and for that reason is the deck of choice for many Tarot teachers. There are many clones of the Rider Waite, using the same pictures, just redrawn like the Shaman Caselli or recoloured like the Golden or the Universal Waite, or updated like the Gilded Tarot. So really although many people say they dislike the RWS they don't really and are most probably using a deck based on it :) Unless of course they use the Thoth....

I actually saw a 'stick man tarot' online: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/stick-figure/

I just want it because it's different I don't think I could use it :giggles:

Some of the vampire decks are pretty. I was in the bookstore today and saw quite a few I would love to have had but my pocketbook says I cannot afford it right now.
