It cropped up in a conversation offline the other day about how animals can pick up on illness, I read or heard about a cat once who kept pawing it's owners breast, it turned out she had breast cancer, i've also seen something on tv about how dogs know when someone is going to have a siezure, have you any stories to share about pets/animals picking up illnesses?

Yes Violet, I have read of this too. It seems that dogs can sniff out cancer on the body as well.... amazing....could be very handy for a doctor.

Re: Animals finding illness
I was reading Diabetes Uk's website and came across this:
'Dogs are being trained to detect low blood glucose
levels and alert their owner to the need to take some form of hypo
treatment in a variety of ways.
It is not known what it is that the dog detects – behavioural changes or an odour given off when a hypo occurs
– but for a person who has lost their hypo awareness or someone whose
blood glucose levels drop very quickly, a 'hypo' dog can give great
confidence, enable them to live life fully and may avert the hypo
progressing to needing hospital care.'
Fascinating reading. It's difficult to understand how they can train the dogs when they don't know how they are sensing the hypos.
Hmmm, there's three diabetics in this house, do you think it would be a good excuse to get a dog?

telepathic pets?
Hi Violet, There
is biologist called Rupert Sheldrake who has been working on a theory he calls
Morphic resonance. He has recently been collecting data about animals
especially pets, cats, dogs, etc. Most dog owners say that their dog knows when
a family member is coming home. This would suggest telepathy in dogs and of
course has led to attacks by the scientific community. But prof Sheldrake has
carried on collecting Data and is finding very good evidence for the phenomena.
He has many clips on Utube and his own web site. He is also doing other
experiments that the public can help with. Have you ever thought of some one
and then they phone you? Or thought someone behind you was looking at you?
there are online experiments that anyone can sign up for and help his research
into this intriguing subject. I have been asking every dog owner I know if
their dog shows this characteristic and every one has said yes. There is much
more to his theory than just dogs and cats, it is very interesting. Science
tried to debunk him, Prof Dawkins and James Randi both tried and failed, he is
a scientist with 80 odd published papers not just an idiot. He has a new book
out called, ’The Science Delusion’ in which he goes on the attack against main
stream science and its limited perspective, turning the tables on Science. If
you are interested take a look at these talks on Utube I think you will like
them. Take care
