I think I saw a documentary on TV or heard somewhere that we only dream when in deep sleep, but often I doze of for less than 5 minutes and have very vivid dreams in that time and feel i've been asleep a lot longer than I have.

I think it's possible to get into deep sleep very quickly if very tired. The fact that you think you were asleep for a lot longer would also indicate that you have indeed had a deep sleep, i.e. were "out for the count" as they say.

I have done this too before often. It is just a few minutes and then I seem to be dreaming.

I have done this too. It feels to me like a cross between a dream and a vision.
