Before going ga-ga over domestic pets consider too their negative side, something for which humans must carry total responsibility.
Don't get me wrong. I love cats and dogs. But we allow our pet cats to wander far-and-wide as if they were still in the wild. They mark their territories by spraying anything and everything, leaving a foul stench, particularly from tom cat pee. They are free to crap on neighbours' gardens, something they do daily in the same places, leaving a sticky mess that ruins plants, grass and gardens. Then the neighbours are left having to clean it up and worse still they get it on their hands when gardening - uggghhh ! And cats kill wild birds in uncountable numbers.
Dogs are often taken out to be 'emptied' on footpaths, verges and parks. They cock their legs and piddle on just about anything. Their crap is foul and a health hazard to children not to mention the smell and having to poke it from shoe soles, often at the most inconvenient times such as when we've been walking or in my own case, out running. Irresponsible owners are often not in control of their dogs either on or off their leashes. Those dogs may attack other dogs, kids and even adults. They regularly kill humans, both inside and outside the home. They are always a potential threat to me when I'm running - you ever tried to deal with a dog biting at your legs and ankles? - and a potential threat whenever they are off leash and unsupervised
It's owners who must shoulder all the responsibility, of course. Animals just do what their nature drives them to do. Responsible owners are not the problem.
