Suppose someone proved there was no afterlife how would this affect you, I don't mean regarding your beliefs as such, but would it make you more fearful of death?

Re: What if there was no afterlife?
I am unconvinced of the existence of an 'Afterlife'. If there is one, jolly good. Otherwise, seeing as I'll be dead anyway, I doubt the non-existence of an afterlife will bother me that much!

If there's no afterlife, no 'spiritual' dimension, why your interest in a website for matters spiritual?

I think we all have a different interpretation of what constitutes 'Spiritual'. For me, one can be spiritual without reference to deity or afterlife, though in saying that I don't preclude either if that's what drives/rewards you.

What does 'spiritual' mean to you then if it doesn't mean 'of the spirit'?
I'm curious to understand....

Re: What if there was no afterlife?
I was very unsure of the fact that there could be a spirit life or a life after death.
Incidents recently have convinced me that is very much a life waiting for us somewhere out there.

Re: What if there was no afterlife?
Hi Tony.
This incident is not so recent,
It happened about two weeks after my husband died,The funeral was the following week and I was down visiting my daughter.
Standing outside in her back garden,my mind was miles away. She had the telly on low and suddenly,I heard his voice clear as a bell 'Hey Joanie'. That was repeated again.
It sounded as if it was coming from slightly behind me to to the right. Hubby was 6ft in life,I am small in height so it also sounded as if it was slightly above my right ear.
It was clear as a bell, just as it used to sound when he was working in the garden and would call me.
I called to my daughter and asked if anyone had a spoken in a simuliar fashon on the telly.
She answered 'no' and asked 'Why?'
I told her and we discussed it.
I know that was hubby's voice,I would have known anywhere!
He always told me he would contact me if he was able and he kept his promise.
Lots of instances have happened since then over 5 years.
I will add further examples later, but that was the most obvious.
Joanie

Re: What if there was no afterlife?
Wow, it is so hard for most of us but when we here this, we all really know that the spirit life continues after we are gone from this plane. I am sure that was just to prove to you that he said Hi, was to relax you and he new it would give you hope. I am sure you wanted to here more, but he didn’t have to say anymore. That was enough to convince you of immortality and to know you would be together again. Bless you Joanie, you must have felt proud.Joanie wrote:Hi Tony.

I would know Ken's voice anywhere,Violet.
He had a deep melodious voice, very pleasant.
I think he was trying to prove to me that he was still around or giving me proof there was life after death.

mac wrote:What does 'spiritual' mean to you then if it doesn't mean 'of the spirit'?
I'm curious to understand....
I've had considerable difficulty in answering that question, Mainly because in answering that, it's very easy to get snarled up in the definition of the word, rather than the actual experience. In fact, it's a difficult to define subject on account of it's nebulous, dynamic and somewhat unknown nature. And it's very easy to wander off topic!
So – What does it mean to me?
Well, if I Just dwell on definitions a moment longer – Your statement is actually very close to mine. Just with one additional word: Human. For me, 'Spiritual' is 'Of the Human Spirit'.
A 'spiritual' experience is one of those fleeting moments where one feels totally alive and connected to the world and those within it. They're not intellectual – much like dreams, analysis can diminish them. There's a sense of being connected with a greater whole, people, humanity or nature. The Ego and Super Ego let up their control and go on the back burner... It's almost like you're tapping into your Id. Best way I can explain it is when that line of separation between “You” and the physical world (be that something alive or inanimate) starts to blur.. When you start to kind of melt and leave your skin... Usually with a very strong sense of elation and joy. They're very individual and subjective experiences, but this doesn't diminish their power. For myself, it's that brief moment – that glimpse of feeling utterly alive, at one with myself and at total, blissful peace. Feeling nothing but human, and being able to celebrate the wonderful truth... We're mortal, we have light and dark. We're capable of limitless love and cruelty. We are a curious (disingenuous?) blend of impulses, drives, feelings and intellect. We're human, and we're complicated, eclectic, curious beings.
It's certainly an altered state of consciousness, but for me it can be accessed through meditation, dreaming, and also being triggered by the occasional random event/experience. It can also be induced through less good routes (such as mind-altering substances). Certainly, it's my belief that there is a 'spiritual' aspect to my being but it's not rooted in a separate existence/dimension. It's the very essence of being a whole, integrated person in the here and now, and the constant process of personal, mental and spiritual growth.
Does that make sense?!

Re: What if there was no afterlife?
The word 'existential' jumped out as I read the last few lines.
Does it make sense? Plainly yes for you. But almost none of it relates to the spiritual I speak about.
The way you describe things it's almost as if you're consciously rejecting the very essence of spiritual - that of the non-physical, the etheric, human form. I'd feel 'wob-sided' if I were to think of myself in such terms but I fully accept that's how things feel for you.
thanks for your explanation
